Toll House Cookies
I copied this from a Nestle's chocolate chip bag from 2020. I think it has been on the back of every bag of Nestle's chocolate chips since at least the 1950s, but although it has always said "ORIGINAL Nestle toll house chocolate chip cookies" I doubt that it has been verbatim the same. I have a always made the recipe with solid vegetable shortening (Crisco) rather than butter. I like it with walnuts, but there are many people who feel that nuts just take up space where chocolate chips should be.
- 2 1/4 C all-purpose flour
- 1 t baking soda
- 1 t salt
- 1 C (2 sticks) butter, softened
- 3/4 C granulated sugar
- 3/4 C packed brown sugar
- 1 t vanilla extract
- 2 large eggs
- 2 C (1 12 oz package) Nestle toll house semi-sweet chocolate morsels
- 1 C chopped nuts
Preheat oven to 375
In a small bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt
In a large mixing bowl (bowl of a stand mixer!) cream sugar and butter/shortening
Add eggs, one at a time, and mix in; add vanilla and mix
Beat in flour mixture gradually
Drop onto ungreased baking sheets by rounded tablespoon
Nestle says to bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. I recommend putting a cookie sheet of unbaked cookies on the bottom of two racks in the oven, setting an alarm for 5 minutes, moving the sheet to the upper rack when it sounds and putting a second sheet on the bottom rack at that time, restarting the alarm; when it sounds, adjust the time based on doneness of the first cookies; when they are done, remove the top sheet, move the bottom sheet up, put in a third sheet, etc.
Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes, remove to wire racks to cool completely.
