Apple Crumble recipe, from Aunt Lee

She emailed us this yesterday. We still have more apples than we know what to do with, so we made the recipe, but we didn’t have ginger so our opinion won’t be a good indication of how the recipe is.

About 5 large apples, peeled and sliced
1/4 cup honey
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/4 cup orange juice concentrate or the actual juice
1 tsp. ginger
2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. cloves
3/4 cup canola oil
3/4 cup sugar
1 cup flour
2 tsp baking powder
Pinch salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 large egg

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Toss apples, honey, brown sugar, orange juice and spices.
Place mixture in a 9×13 inch pan.
In a separate bowl, mix oil, sugar, flour, baking powder, salt,  vanilla and egg to form a thick batter.
Drop by spoonfuls onto apple mixture.
Bake 45 minutes at 350 or until top is nicely browned.

  1. Arlene says it was good, but she personally prefers the more chewy topping of an apple crisp, with granola or oatmeal as the basis for the topping. She also likes things less rich than the 3/4 C oil makes this topping.

Me, I liked it a lot.
